Introduction / Introdução

You should be wondering: "Who the hell's that Gralha?" Originally, Gralha is a kind of a little bird that lives in the south of Brazil and inspires the creation of this character. Like you should be tired to know, the comics becoming a cultural phenomenon thanks to the newspapers, since the beginning of the century. Today the newspapers no longer give so much importance (nor space) to the comics as formerly in Brazil, but even so, a lot of good thing has been appearing in them... and a good example is the Gralha.

Você deve estar se perguntando: "Quem diabos é esse Gralha?" Além disso: "Gralha não é aquele passarinho que come pinhão, ou melhor, enterra para comer e depois esquece ?" Como você deve estar cansado de saber, os quadrinhos começaram a se tornar um fenômeno cultural graças aos jornais, que desde o início do século, abriram espaço às HQ's. Houve tempo em que haviam suplementos inteiros dedicados às tiras. Hoje os jornais já não dão tanta importância ( nem espaço ) aos quadrinhos como antigamente, mas mesmo assim, muita coisa boa tem surgido neles. Há muitos artistas que sabem usar como ninguém o apertado espaço hoje dedicado às tiras de quadrinhos. Ou seja, os jornais ainda são um bom refúgio. E não só para o humor... E foi nessa lacuna que esse tal de Gralha se aninhou.



  

He appeared in October of 1997, in a special edition of the extinct brazilian version of Heavy Metal Magazine. Several local comic artists were summoned, of which a group decided to do a common project: a homage to an unknown icon of the brazilian comics , the Captain Gralha. Published in the beginning of the forties by the unknown (and almost mytical) Francisco Iwerten. Fugitive of a planet of man-birds, governed by terrible Thagos, the usurper, Captain Gralha found refuge in the Earth, where it used their alien powers ito combat to the crime in Brazil. Mixed of Flash Gordon with Superman, he had brief life. Only two numbers of their adventures were published, dipping that pioneering work in the same abyss that so many other precursors of brazilian comics. We all agreed that a winged man, with a "G" in the chest and mustache would not be very well seen nowadays. So, we opted then to create an updated version of the dated Captain. Alessandro Dutra created the look, Gian Danton and José Aguiar created the history, Antonio Eder, Luciano Lagares, Tako X, Edson Kohatsu, Augusto Freitas, Dutra and Aguiar took charge of the art and Nilson Miller did the cover of that edition. So, the Gralha made his debut. One year later the character starts a weekly page in the newspapper Gazeta do Povo, now as an adolescent that descends of the originalCaptain Gralha . A hero beginner in a metropolis a little different from the real Curitiba City. Maybe, the only city of the country, where a super-hero would walk the streets without seeming so wierdo. After all, Curitiba City sells an image of "city of the first world". And nothing more appropriate to this city that a watchman wearing tights.

Ele surgiu em outubro de 1997, numa edição especial (comemorando os 15 anos da Gibiteca de Curitiba ) da extinta revista Metal Pesado. Para realizá-la, foram convocados vários quadrinhistas locais, dos quais um grupo decidiu fazer de um projeto comum uma homenagem a um ícone desconhecido dos quadrinhos curitibanos, o Capitão Gralha. Publicado no início dos anos quarenta pelo também desconhecido (e quase lendário até) Francisco Iwerten. Fugitivo de um planeta de homens-pássaros, regido pelo terrível Thagos, o usurpador, o Capitão Gralha encontrou refúgio na Terra, onde utilizava seus poderes alienígenas no combate ao crime no Paraná. Misto de Flash Gordon com Super-Homem, ele teve vida breve. Foram publicados apenas dois números de suas aventuras, mergulhando esse trabalho pioneiro no mesmo abismo que tantos outros precursores das HQs nacionais. Infelizmente, ninguém sabe se existe ainda algum exemplar de suas revistas.Foi unânime que um homem alado, com um "G" no peito e bigodinho não seria muito bem visto hoje em dia. Optou-se então por criar uma versão atualizada do datado Capitão. Alessandro Dutra criou o visual, Gian Danton e José Aguiar criaram a história, Antonio Eder, Luciano Lagares, Tako X, Edson Kohatsu, Augusto Freitas, Dutra e Aguiar se encarregaram da arte e Nilson Miller fez a capa da edição. E assim o Gralha fez sua estréia. Um ano depois o personagem ganhava sua página semanal no caderno Fun da Gazeta do Povo, agora como um adolescente que descende do Capitão Gralha original. Um herói iniciante em uma metrópole um pouco diferente da Curitiba de hoje . Talvez, a única cidade do país, onde um super-herói se enquadraria sem parecer (muito) deslocado. Afinal, ela mesma faz questão de, provincianamente, vender sua imagem como "cidade de primeiro mundo". E nada mais isso que um vigilante de colante.

By the way, the Curitiba of the Gralha is a character on itself, where all the characteristics of the real Curitiba City are exaggerated. Located in an uncertain future, There ate giant sky-scrapers and many, a lot of trees all over it. That Curitiba seems to grow infinitely, even reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Actually, it is the paradise of every super-hero. There, you can find all the "clichés" of the gender "masked hero". But nor everything is a paradise as it can seem. The crime still resists in a city of such big proportions.

Por sinal, a Curitiba do Gralha é um personagem à parte em seu universo, onde todas as características da verdadeira são elevadas à enésima potência. Localizada num futuro indeterminado, nela convivem arranha-céus gigantescos e muitas, muitas árvores. Essa Curitiba parece crescer ordenada e infinitamente, chegando até mesmo ao Atlântico. Na verdade, ela é o paraíso de todo super-herói. Nela todos os lugares-comuns do gênero "herói encapuzado" existem. Mas nem tudo é um paraíso como pode parecer. O crime ainda resiste, ainda mais numa cidade de proporções tão modestas.

And the super-villains are all over the place. Araucaria, Coffee Express, Biscuí, CyberBoy, Lambrequim-Man, Botanical Doctor, Polaquinha and Human Catfish. Or a mysterious super-genius known as The Cranial, whose giant head is tattooed as a pêssanka (those Ukrainians painted eggs of Easter) it is not scheming some evil plan to conquer the world. Definitively, all of the "classic" elements, and why not, "clichés" of the comics are present in the comics of the Gralha. Yes, you will find crazy scientists, mutants and hot female villains in the universe of the Crow, but not as you are accustomed to see. To begin the Gralha is wearing a costume that make him looks lake a fool and inoffensive little bird. Can't be more ecological than that.
Some of the authors like the super-heroes genre but some openly dislike them. Some of them draw him in a cantoonished way, some realistically or even in a abstract way... nevertheless, he is only one. But we agree, the fun of creating that little bird is in, simply, to do something that of so common, it ends up being "unique".
Then have fun reading the Gralha and try to imagine what the time reserves for our singular super-hero!

E os super-vilões estão à solta. Araucária, Café Expresso, Biscuí do Mato, Pivete Cybertécnico, Homem Lambrequim, Doutor Botânico, Polaquinha e Bagre Humano são alguns dos extravagantes que são enviados à ilha-prisão do A.H.U. pelo Gralha. Isso quando o misterioso supergênio conhecido como O Craniano, cuja cabeça gigantesca é tatuada como uma pêssanka (aqueles ovos pintados pelos ucranianos na Páscoa) não está tramando alguma artimanha. Definitivamente, todos os elementos "clássicos", e porque não, "clichês" dos quadrinhos de heróis estão presentes nas HQs do Gralha. Sim, você vai encontrar cientistas loucos, mutantes e vilãs boazudas no universo do Gralha, mas não como está acostumado a ver. A começar ele é um homem fantasiado como um tolo e inofensivo passarinho. Quer coisa mais ecológica, e por que não ufanista, do que ser uma Gralha?

Alguns de seus autores gostam de super-heróis outros abertamente os detestam. Uns o desenham cartunizado, alguns realisticamente ou até mesmo abstrato... E ainda assim, ele é um só. Mas convenhamos, a graça de criar esse passarinho está em, simplesmente, fazer algo que de tão comum, acaba sendo único.

Então divirta-se lendo o que o Gralha já foi e tente imaginar o que o tempo reserva para o nosso singular "Vigilante das Araucárias".
